Overton man arrested in shooting injury of 2-year-old
There may be more charges coming, including making a false statement to investigators.
CADDO PARISH, Louisiana (KLTV) - An Overton father has been arrested in Louisiana after a 2-year-old was injured by a gunshot.
Devan Raye Page, 23, was booked into the Caddo Parish Jail Tuesday in connection with the shooting injury of his 2-year-old child. The child was airlifted to a Shreveport hospital for surgery after the Nov. 20 shooting.
According to Smith County Sheriff Larry Smith, Page’s arrest warrant was signed Tuesday for a charge of injury to a child by reckless act. Page was arrested at the hospital where his child was being treated, Smith said.
There may be more charges coming, including making a false statement to investigators. Smith said Page initially told officials he left the weapon in a holster out of his daughter’s reach. He later said that he carried the gun around on his waistband.
The gun fell from the waistband and the toddler accidentally shot herself with it.
Page’s Smith County bond has been set at $500,000. He remains in Caddo Parish as of Monday, and Smith says Page is set to be extradited to Smith County within the week.
“There’s no winner in this situation,” added Smith. “If you have a small child in your home or anticipate having a small child in your home - the potential of having one in - by all means, keep your firearms locked up in a place that they can’t get a hold of them.”
The 2-year-old, who Smith said was injured by a small-caliber revolver, is now reported to be in “very good” condition “considering all the circumstances.”
