Amber Alert canceled for 7-year-old boy in Iowa after standoff with suspect

The 7-year-old was found safe, and his father was arrested after a high-speed chase and a standoff.

JEFFERSON, Iowa (WOWT/Gray News) - Iowa authorities confirmed Tuesday night that the child sought by way of an Amber Alert on that afternoon has been found and is safe.

According to a Tuesday night news release from the Iowa Department of Public Safety, 34-year-old Brandon Duong is in custody and is facing one count of first-degree kidnapping.

Authorities say Duong violated a December custody order on Tuesday when he took the child from Greene Elementary School in Jefferson that afternoon.

An Amber Alert was issued at 3:28 p.m., the release states. At 4:53 p.m., authorities said they found his vehicle northeast of Remsen. Following a high-speed chase that ended in a crash, Duong fled the vehicle carrying the child, the release states. Authorities say he was also carrying a rifle.

After a negotiation with the man, he was placed under arrest, according to the release.

The child is currently under the care of the Iowa Department of Human Services.
