1 dead, 5 injured in 3-vehicle crash in Anderson County

ANDERSON COUNTY, Texas (KLTV) - A Saturday crash in Anderson County left one woman dead.

According to a report from Texas DPS, the crash happened on U.S. Highway 287 near Elkhart around 6:18 p.m. Saturday. A Chevrolet Silverado driven by Brian Scruggs, 21, of Elkhart, was driving south behind a Honda Accord driven by a Palestine woman. According to the release, Scruggs hit the Accord from behind, causing it to travel into oncoming traffic.

The Accord then struck a Ford Taurus head-on, killing passenger Mary Merlino, 22, of Mineola, the release said. The driver and passenger of the Taurus, as well as the driver and passenger of the Accord, were taken from the scene to nearby hospitals to be treated for injuries.

After striking the Accord, Scruggs overcorrected, the report said, and drove off the roadway into a tree. He was also taken from the scene to be treated for injuries.
