Vulgar messages spray-painted on Fuller Springs Missionary Baptist Church
LUFKIN, Texas (KTRE) - This week, Fuller Springs Missionary Baptist Church was one of two properties vandalized in Lufkin. The church is on Fuller Springs Drive.
Vulgar messages were spray-painted on the fellowship hall side of the church.
The pastor of the church, Stephen Willis says, “One of the deacons sent me pictures of it all. It said some pretty nasty stuff.”
An abandoned house down the street from the church was also marked with similar graffiti. The congregation was shocked by the vandalism.
“I was just really hurt, to think that someone would do that to our church. It's upsetting,” long time church member, Sharon Young says.
“Once upon a time, things were sacred and there was boundaries you just didn't cross,” Willis says.
Pastor Willis says although he is disappointed, this is not the first incident at the church. It has been burglarized in the past.
“I don't know who did it. Maybe people will start talking,” Willis says. “I noticed that here was ruts from a vehicle all the way up to the fellowship hall. So, it was somebody that knew better."
Willis says moving forward as a congregation, they hope to invest in better security procedures such as cameras. He says that the insurance will cover the damage on the church.
“But most of all, I think God can use opportunities like this to speak to people’s hearts,” Willis explains. “The person that did it, knows that they did it. I’m praying the Holy Spirit will convict them."
If you have any information about the vandalism, call the Lufkin police department.
