Jo Ann Stephens, former Mineola teacher, sentenced

MINEOLA, TX (KLTV) - A Mineola judge sentenced Jo Ann Stephens to 180 days in the Wood County Jail and 10 years probation for having an improper relationship with a student, Wednesday morning.

During the sentencing hearing the Pastor of the Mineola First Baptist Church, Mark Neely testified on behalf of Ms. Stephens' character. He said he has known Stephens for 11 years. Neely said when the allegations first arose, Stephens was forthcoming with details surrounding the situation.

Neely said Stephens is truly remorseful and that she told him she knows she committed a sin.

When Jo Ann Stephens took the stand she apologized to the community, the judge, the victim and his family. She hoped the judge would choose the lighter sentence.

Stephens will begin serving her 180 day sentence on May 4th. If she violates her probation she could serve an additional five years in prison.

Stephens served at Diboll ISD as the girls basketball coach during the 1990s, leading them to an undefeated season in district play in the 1994-95 season.
