Former Mineola teacher subject of 5 indictments

MINEOLA, TX (KLTV) - A Wood County Grand Jury has indicted a former Mineola school teacher on charges relating to her alleged inappropriate relationship with a child.

Jo Ann Stephens was indicted on five counts; including two counts of Sexual Assault of a child, two counts of Inappropriate Relationship with a child and one count of Online Solicitation.

Each indictment carries a $25,000 bond.

According to Captain Box, JoAnn is supposed to turn herself in to the Wood County Sheriff's Office by Thursday morning.

The Mineola Police Department originally arrested Stephens, 43, on December 16, on charges of an improper relationship with a student. The student has since graduated from Mineola High School.

The alleged incident took place between Stephens and a 15-year-old male student, in May of 2008 at Keys Creek RV Park near Lake Holbrook, in Mineola.

Investigators found DNA evidence in the back of the truck the male victim was driving at the RV park that links the student to Stephens.

Stephens and the student reportedly were communicating by cell phone calls and text messages on a trac phone that she provided for the student. Investigators also say that Stephens gave the student other gifts, clothes, and money.

Stephens resigned as an elementary and middle school Physical Education teacher at Mineola ISD after her arrest.
