In our zeal to oust immigrants, many of us are forgetting one of the main reasons people decide to enter this country illegally. That is, they have to depend on the federal government to make them legal. Records indicate that anyone who wants to enter this country legally will have to wait 5-20 years to scale the bureaucratic mountain created by the inefficiencies we all have experienced with the federal government. It takes less time than that to get a college degree!
Now some will argue that kind of wait is a small price to pay for U.S. Citizenship and I agree. But I don't think any of us want to punish those who want to follow the rules. Legislation recently debated in the Senate promises to clean up the backlog in 8 years. And that's called progress?
The current system needs to be trashed and rebuilt from the ground up. Otherwise we will continue to encourage people to cheat. You can write me anytime by going to our website, clicking the community section and then "A Better East Texas." All letters I receive are posted.

I AGREE WITH YOUR EDITORIAL ON IMMIGRATION. I KNOW THE U.S. CAN'T JUST GIVE CITIZENSHIP TO EVERYONE BUT 5-20 YRS. IS TOO LONG. THE U.S.A IS SUPPOSED TO BE THE BEST COUNTRY IN THE WORLD BUT THEY SURE KNOW HOW TO BE DYSFUNCTIONAL.
