SHERMAN, Texas (KXII) - Protesters gathered at Sherman Town Center Sunday afternoon as part of a nationwide “ICE Out for Good” movement following the shooting death of a Minneapolis mother by a U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement officer.

Renee Good, a mother of three, was shot and killed by an ICE officer while inside her vehicle last week. The incident sparked protests across the nation over the weekend.

“We believe that ICE is out of control well beyond their mandate, they’re currently being used against American citizens which is a violation of our constitution,” Nan Campbell, Indivisible Sherman Leader.

Local turnout spans region

Indivisible Sherman hosted the Sunday afternoon protest, drawing people from across Texoma to the Sherman Town Center. Protesters peacefully waved signs and flags in support of the movement.

“I work in Sherman but I live in Allen now so I try and support all of the communities that I am apart of,” said Tom Blake, a protester.

Amy Flack, another protester, said the national response gave her hope. “It makes me feel encouraged and maybe if enough people speak up something will change,” she said.

Personal connections drive participation

Protesters attended for various reasons, with some citing personal experiences with immigration enforcement. Terry Templeton said her cousin’s husband was recently deported back to England.

“I actually had a family member deported,” Templeton said. “They’re just really good people and it was a sad thing to happen to such a good family.”

Deborah Rushing said the moment calls for collective action. “Everybody is realizing that now is the time and that we the people need to use our voices,” she said.

Protesters said the gathering represents the beginning of efforts to create lasting change.
