Church leaders call on each other for more religious expression
An East Texas political action committee says the church has been quiet for far too long, when it comes to traditional family values in America.
As the debate on same-sex marriage becomes more heated, religious leaders are calling on each other to stand up for what they believe.
In a packed room, members of Grassroots America We the People listened to Bridlewood Church Pastor Dan Cummins explain what he says is happening in America and what God has to say about it.
"We as the church and the clergy are the last line of defense to save this nation," he said.
Cummins told the crowd Christians had slept through major political earthquakes and that it was time to wake up.
"This is where we draw a line in the sand. This is where we as the church and the clergy will die, if need be, and go to prison, over the definition of biblical marriage," Cummins said.
Cummins spoke about issues on which he says the church needs to end its silence. Those issues include abortion, gender identity, biblical marriage and freedom of religious expression.
"He puts it precisely and concisely the way I feel about how our churches, pastors, and priest. [They] need to speak out for bringing God back into our schools and the public arena," said Diane Rydzak, a member of Grassroots America We the People.
In May, President Barack Obama openly said he supported gay marriage.
"It is important for me to go ahead an affirm that I think same-sex couples should be able to get married," he told ABC News.
But, in East Texas, many people have expressed the opposite.
"I find it very amusing that those on the left that preach tolerance are very intolerant of those of us on the right when we exercise our first amendment rights," Cummins added.
He said he has his own beliefs about whether or not same sex marriage is right or wrong. He said their fight is about exercising religious freedom.
Cummins also said Christians are commanded to love everyone, regardless of their sexual orientation. But, he maintains that marriage is for the purpose of procreation and that same-sex marriage will not fulfill that purpose.
