Former Van Zandt County chief deputy gets 44 months in prison for striking handcuffed arrestee

Speaking in court, Craig Shelton said he accepted full responsibility for violating the victim’s civil rights. Shelton also acknowledged his desire for drug and alcohol counseling, which was included in his sentence. Former Van Zandt County Sheriff’s Sgt. Blake Snell also was sentenced in an obstruction of justice case resulting from the 2021 incident involving Shelton. Snell was accused of lying to investigators about the incident, according to information presented in court.
“We identified a need in the community, a food gap if you will. And so, 28 percent of the population, about 20,000 people in Gregg County are considered food insecure. And so, we have 13 partner agencies here already and so by opening this we’ll be able to supply more food for the people who are our neighbors,” Emerson said.
According to the Texas Department of Transportation, last year 72 children younger than eight years old died in traffic crashes in Texas; 16 of those were unrestrained at the time of their death.
