For decades in the early part of the 1900's, historically black colleges clashed in huge matchups right here in East Texas.
This Saturday, that tradition returns to the city of Tyler. Texas College will host Texas Southern University in the first Rose City Classic.
The schools held a press conference at the Tyler Chamber of Commerce Monday morning. Kickoff is set for Saturday, September 20, at 6 p.m. at Trinity Mother Frances Rose Stadium.
The game coincides with the first weekend of the East Texas State Fair.
"We've got a lot of Texas Southern graduates who live up here in East Texas, as well as Texas College graduates that live in Houston," TSU head coach Johnnie Cole said. "So it's a fun, family football game."
"Everybody is ready for the two half time shows, to see the bands go at it," Texas College wide receiver Curtis Shaw said. "You know, the step show, the drill team. Then it's Texas Southern and Texas College so they're going to come out and see it, two predominately black colleges. People want to come out and watch the activities."
