High School Seniors Not Graduating Because TAKS

Many East Texas high school seniors will not graduate this year - because seniors are required to pass all their required courses, and the TAKS test.

At TISD, sixty nine seniors at John Tyler did not pass the TAKS, and thirty one at Robert E. Lee.

The total number this year is 100. Last year, 2007, about the same - 108.

Now TISD said those students have options to still graduate, including summer school and another chance to pass the TAKS.

"Our goal is to get them the help they need between June first and the middle of July when the test happens, and we have a summer graduation in August and hope that they can graduate," said Dr. Karen Raney, Director of Secondary Education, Tyler Independent School District.

Across East Texas we compared the numbers of seniors that aren't graduating. They are TISD 10%, Longview 12%, and Jacksonville 8%.
