In office for three decades, Smith County Sheriff J.B. Smith says he wants to continue leading his growing department. He announced his re-election effort in Tyler Wednesday morning.
"The thought of retirement crossed my mind, but I don't hunt, I don't fish, and I'm a terrible golfer. And so, this is my passion. I love what I do. My people proudly serve the public, and they show it every day," Smith said.
Sheriff Smith also announced the addition of a Cyber Crimes task force to his department, as well as a new program called "Computer Cop."
The free software will be made available to parents who want to keep track of their childrens' online activities.
Smith does have an opponent in his re-election battle: Republican Andy Dunklin.
