TYLER, TX (KLTV) - A 20-year-old Athens man has been sentenced to 46 months in prison for trying to make ricin.

Judge Robert W. Schroeder sentenced Abel Keith Fulton on the charge Friday at the Tyler federal courthouse.

According to information presented in court, from August to September 2016, Fulton possessed ricin at his home in Athens.

"Ricin is a biological toxin that can be fatal if ingested, inhaled, or injected," a press release from the U.S. Attorney's Office for the Eastern District of Texas. "There is no known antidote or cure for ricin poisoning."

Fulton's house was searched by FBI agents in September of 2016. The search was prompted after the homeowner told officials their son was attempting to make a hazardous chemical agent.

According to court documents, Fulton will have to serve three years of supervised release after he gets out of prison. He must also pay $30,060 in restitution.
