SMITH COUNTY, TX (KLTV) - Smith County Sheriff's Office is investigating a murder-suicide after two bodies were found Wednesday night.
According to the Smith County Sheriff's Office, at about 9:06 p.m. Wednesday, deputies were dispatched to the 24000 block of Highway 31 East in reference to a welfare check. They had been notified by the Gregg County 911 that they had received a call from a woman reporting that she had found a body in a field.
When deputies arrived at the scene they contacted the woman who had made the initial report. She then led deputies to the location where she had found the body. At the location, the deputies observed the body of a deceased white male. After finding the body, according to the Sheriff's Office, they sealed off the area and performed a sweep of the location. During the sweep, they found the body of a second victim a short distance away.
The Criminal Investigation Division and the Crime Scene Unit were called to assist with the investigation. According to the Smith County Sheriff's Office, they obtained search warrants in order to search the area where the victims were located as well as the vehicle that was found at the location.
During the investigation the Sheriff's Office determined that both victims had died due to apparent gunshot wounds. The first victim was found to have suffered multiple gunshot wounds while the second victim was found with a single gunshot wound to the head.
At this moment, the identities of the victims have not been confirmed. Autopsies have been ordered for both the bodies. According to the Sheriff's Office the investigation is still active and ongoing.
