TYLER, TX (KLTV) - James Cavender, the founder of a western retail chain based in Tyler, has died at the age of 87.

Cavender is the founder of Cavender's, a retail chain with 80 locations stretched over 11 states.

Cavender's Chief Financial Officer Jim Thompson confirmed Cavender died Tuesday morning.

"It's a really sad time for us," Thompson said. "He had been in and out of the hospital for time to time but this was a surprise and somewhat unexpected."

Cavender began his career in 1957 when he opened a burger restaurant in Pittsburg. He opened his first Cavender's location in the same town in 1965. The business grew from there.

Cavender's is now run by Cavender's son, Joe. Two other sons, Mike and Clay, are also involved in the company.
