SMITH COUNTY, TX (KLTV) - The Smith County SWAT team responded Monday evening to a scene where  a person had barricaded himself within a residence east of Tyler. That man has now been taken into custody.

Coslin said that the suspect, Larry Hicks, age 46, has been taken into custody on Monday evening. Coslin said that he was taken without incident.

Coslin said the incident began when a parole officer went to Hicks' home to check on why his security ankle bracelet had stopped working. He found that Hicks had cut the bracelet off himself. When the officer approached Hicks to look for the bracelet, he pushed the officer out of the house and locked himself inside. The officer then called 911.

SWAT surrounded the house, working to negotiate with the man to come out. He was taken into custody after about an hour and a half of negotiating.

Hicks' record with police shows past offenses such as aggravated assault with a deadly weapon, theft, burglary, and several parole violations. He had been released on Friday, May 18,  after spending just over a month in the Smith County jail on a parole violation.

Traffic was blocked off at Bascom Road and Old Omen Road, and was being diverted onto CR 262, or Old Omen Road, according to Sgt. Darrell Coslin with the Smith County Sheriff's Office. It has since reopened.
