LONGVIEW, TX (KLTV) - A citizen assists an officer after an altercation during a traffic stop with two suspects who resisted arrest and attacked the officer.
Richard Alan Stansbery Jr., 48, and Maria Stansbery, 43, both of Longview, were charged with assault on a public servant among other charges after refusing arrest on Sunday.
Longview officers stopped a 2015 Kia Sorrento, Sunday around 9:30 p.m. at Reel Road and Swan Street.
According to police, the officer observed the vehicle crossing the center line and swerving.
The driver, identified as Maria, refused to cooperate with the officer when he began questioning her. She also refused to exit the car at which time the passenger Stansbery Jr. also became argumentative with the officer.
Maria Stansbery was removed from the vehicle. Stansbery Jr. then exited the vehicle after he was instructed to stay inside. When the officer confronted him to place him in handcuffs a struggle ensued, according to police.
Stansbery Jr. and the officer ended up on the ground. The suspect reportedly tried to strike the officer. When the officer attempted to remove the taser from his holster, Stansberry Jr. grabbed the weapon and pulled the trigger. Both Stansbery Jr. and the officer were struck by the probe.
During the struggle with Stansbery Jr., Maria approached the officer from behind and began pulling on his shirt collar, making it difficult for him to breathe, according to Longview police.
The officer was assisted by a citizen in the neighborhood which allowed him time to deploy pepper spray towards Maria. He was then able to handcuff both suspects and take them into custody.
The officer sustained minor injuries, according to Longview police.
Richard Alan Stansbery Jr. is charged with assault on a public servant, a third-degree felony, and attempting to take a weapon from an officer, also a third-degree felony.
Maria Stansbery is charged with assault on a public servant and driving while intoxicated.
