NWS preliminary reports : 4 confirmed tornadoes hit East Texas, 2 EF-3
VAN ZANDT COUNTY, TX (KLTV) - The National Weather Service Fort Worth Office confirmed Sunday that at least four tornadoes hit East Texas Saturday night.
The NWS said they are able to confirm at least 4 tornadoes impacted Van Zandt County.
Tornado 1 was near Grand Saline and has been given a preliminary rating of EF-0.
Tornado 2, around 1 mile east of Canton, has been given a preliminary rating of EF-0.
Tornado 3, which is the long track south of Eustace to just west of Canton, has been given a preliminary rating of EF-3.
Tornado 4, which is the other long track that started out in Henderson County, tracked just east of Canton and up into Rains County has been given a preliminary rating EF-3 for the Van Zandt County portion.
NWS said path lengths and path widths are still pending on all tornadoes as well. They will have additional survey crews out tomorrow.
The weather service said surveys will likely take days to complete. A map of the storms' paths shows damage from Emory to Malakoff.
According to the NWS, the first tornado struck the Grand Saline area about 4:15 p.m. and had a brief track. The second tornado struck the Canton area about 5:10 p.m. It also traveled a brief track. A third tornado with a longer path traveled the Canton area from 5:29 p.m. to 6:09 p.m. and a fourth tornado hit the area from Henderson County, through Van Zandt County, through Canton and on to Emory, from 5:41 p.m. to 7:28 p.m. If the path is determined to be continuous, the NWS says that storm traveled a total of 51 miles.
Crews are set to survey damages from fatal storms that swept across East Texas on Saturday evening.
The NWS Fort Worth office said a crew will be in Canton and other areas on Sunday. It's expected to be a complicated survey due to the area being hit with multiple storms and multiple tornadoes and final assessments may not be available for several days.
The NWS office in Shreveport said they will also send a team out to the Mineola area on Monday.
