TYLER, TX (KLTV) - Multiple officials responded Friday when a Smith County inmate climbed a 10-foot tall basketball goal on top of a jail roof and refused to come down.

According to Smith County Sheriff's Office, an inmate became uncooperative and climbed the equipment in a recreational yard at a jail facility on Elm Street. Sheriff Larry Smith said the yard is located on the roof and is enclosed.

The sheriff's office confirmed Friday afternoon that the inmate involved was Gustavo Zavala-Garcia, who is a suspect in the murder of Kayla Gomez-Orozco.

Crews used a ladder to reach Zavala-Garcia, who was clinging to equipment. The road was temporarily shut down while officials work.

According to Smith County Sgt. Darrell Coslin, officials do not believe the move was an escape attempt. Coslin also said no one was injured in the incident.

The sheriff said he does not believe Zavala-Garcia was injured, but he will be checked for any possible injuries.

Smith added that there was no potential he could have escaped and said there was no opening in the proximity of where he was located. Smith says it is unlikely additional charges will be filed against Zavala-Garcia, who is in jail on a charge of capital murder.
