Family member detained in case of Kayla Gomez-Orozco
EAST TEXAS (KLTV) - During a press conference in regards to the case of Kayla Gomez-Orozco, Smith County Sheriff Larry Smith informed they located the body, believed to be Kayla, in a well near a property located on the 22000 block of FM 2493 in Smith County.

According to Sheriff Smith, investigators developed a lead of a home on FM 2493. Authorities sought and obtained a search warrant from the 241st State District Judge Jack Skeen for further investigation of the residence, where the body believed to be of Kayla Gomez-Orozco was found in a water well. Smith County Precinct 4 Justice of the Peace Mitch Shamburger held an inquest at the scene and ordered the body taken to the Southwestern Institute of Forensic Sciences in Dallas, Texas, for an autopsy which was performed today.
Prior to the discovery, the search for Kayla began west of the Bullard First Assembly Church, where she was last seen, on Hwy 69. The search party then changed its direction mid-afternoon.
It was later discovered that a family member lives at the residence where Kayla's body was found. The family member, described as a Hispanic male born in 1992, voluntarily accompanied officials to be questioned in the case of Kayla and is currently held in custody at the Smith County Jail with no charges placed. The person is on a Federal Immigration Customs detainer.
Sherriff Larry Smith stated that Federal, state and local law enforcement officials will continue the investigation in order to serve justice for Kayla and her family.
Smith also added that they will release more information once an arrest warrant is sought and obtained.

Tyler ISD released the following statement:
We are saddened to learn that the body of Kayla Gomez-Orozco, the Jack Elementary school student who has been missing since Tuesday, Nov. 1, has been found. Our hearts and sympathies go out to Kayla's family and friends as they come to terms with this painful and senseless tragedy.
We ask that you keep the students and staff at Jack Elementary School in your thoughts and prayers. Additional counselors from throughout the District will be at the Jack campus next week to provide assistance and support as needed for staff and students.
