East Texas bakery makes list of Oprah's Favorite Things

TYLER, TX (KLTV) - An East Texas bakery is receiving praise from a TV mogul.

Oprah Winfrey unveiled her annual holiday list on Thursday, and the 2016 list included Tyler-based Janie's Cakes.

Winfrey had high praise for the bakery, saying "Hands down, it's the best pound cake I've ever had."

The network owner also said, "Texas-based bakery owner Janie Clapp makes pound cake using only natural ingredients, just as her great-grandmother taught her. But Grandma never filled her cake with coffee-toffee buttercream or raspberry curd! Hands down, it's the best pound cake I've ever had."

Bakery owners responded to the news in a Facebook post, "We are yelling from the roof top...the best secret ever. We are Oprah's Favorite Things 2016! Pick up O, The Oprah Magazine ion Nov 8 and check us out! #OprahsFavoriteThings"

Janie's Cakes is run by a mother-and-daughter team. Janie Clapp and her daughter Katherine Crow have been shipping cakes across the nation for the past 13 years. But Clapp has been making cakes far longer. She started back in 1987.

Bakery owners have known about the news for several months, but now they're happy to share the news with customers and friends.

"Is there a word better than thrilled or excited? We haven't come up with it yet," Crow said. "We are thrilled and excited to be a part of this experience."

The bakery has already seen an increase in orders, Crow said.

"People on social media are saying that the best-kept secret is out and we want others to know about the best-kept secret," she added.

Winfrey included a 20 percent off deal on the cakes, which are originally priced $28 to $40 each. Customers wanting to assuage their sweet tooth can use the code OPRAH.

The deal applies to all Jane-sized cakes for customers who order online and use the code.

When asked which flavor is her favorite, Crow seemed unable to choose. She's partial to the Italian Jane but she also likes the Plain Jane.

"I love them all," she said, laughing.

It seems that Winfrey does, too.
