Authorities identify suspect in I-20 travel center shooting

VAN ZANDT COUNTY, TX (KLTV) - The Van Zandt County Sheriff's Department has identified the suspect in a shooting at the Canton Travel Center on Tuesday.

Around 4 p.m. on Tuesday, Van Zandt County deputies responded to a shooting that had just occurred at the Canton Travel Center on Interstate 20.

Rudolph Chestang,30, of Arlington, Texas is accused of shooting D-Jay Stevenson after Stevenson tried to intervene in an altercation between Chestang and another man, according to a witness at the scene. Chestang fled the scene in a vehicle, but was later detained by Canton police at the Circle K gas station on Highway 19 and Interstate 20.

After being positively identified by surveillance video, Chestang was transported to the Van Zandt County Justice Center and booked into jail, at which time it was discovered that he was in possession of marijuana.

Chestang is being held on attempted murder and prohibited items in a correctional facility.

Officials with the sheriff's office say Chestang also has a charge of failure to ID fugitive out of Tarrant County.
