CANTON, TX (KLTV) - There's a certain feeling one gets when entering a mom-and-pop style restaurant or cafe. It feels like walking into a friend's house, or, depending upon what is being served, like visiting your grandmother's kitchen.
That's the feeling some say they get when walking into Buttermilk's in downtown Canton. The restaurant features old hardwood floors, a long counter with a row of welcoming bar stools, and plenty of tables. Most importantly, most would agree, is the friendly greeting customers receive when they walk in the door of the vintage downtown building.
Kristi Risner, who not only heads up the serving staff, but is also the marketing director for the restaurant, chatted about the philosophy of the owner and the staff.
"We're all about Southern food," Kristi said while showing off the buttermilk pie under glass domes on stands on the counter. "We will make 180 pies on Thursday, and by Saturday, they're all gone," she said.
She's referring to the restaurant's buttermilk pies, already famous in the area. They make a traditional buttermilk pie like your Southern grandmother might have made, but they also make them in flavors: chocolate, coconut, chocolate-pecan, and lemon.
Cody Tucker is kitchen manager, and he spoke about one major factor in the business' three successful years,
"We make everything in-house. We make all our pies, our sauces, everything. We handcut our fries, slice our own tomatoes and all of that," he says. "Also, during the spring and summer, we buy as much of our produce as we can here in East Texas."
Ben Carter is the owner, and has high standards for the business, which is evident by the prompt, friendly service and fresh home cooking. The line that wraps around the building nearly every day is evidence that it's paying off for his business.
If you are a Southern food connoisseur, the large slab of country fried steak with pepper gravy, fried green tomatoes, and pecan cobbler will likely appeal to you. The bacon burgers are tall and loaded with crisp, thickly-cut bacon. If you're on a diet, don't worry, they've got you covered with their large salad overflowing with fresh vegetables and topped with chicken, either grilled or fried (if you're not too serious about that diet).
"All our burgers are half-pound burgers," Risner pointed out as she placed the tall, hot sandwich on the bar.

The food at Buttermilk's will likely be appreciated by those looking for traditional Southern-style cooking, with a twist or two, of course. The old-fashioned, small town charm is a winner for those who love to feel like they've stepped back in time, or who aren't into the fair-style food available at Trade Days in Canton each month. Just be prepared to wait during that time each month, as out-of-towners who have discovered the restaurant will be there with you.
Important tips for your visit to Buttermilk's:
- Children eat free on Monday, so it's a good time for families to visit.
- Thursday through Saturday is all you can eat catfish night, which Risner said they expanded from one night a week due to demand.
- Though other downtown restaurants are not typically open on Monday, Buttermilk's is open daily at 11 a.m., except Sunday.
- Catering and event-hosting for showers, parties and rehearsal dinners is available.
