Stores see increase in sales as East Texans prepare for cold blast

LONGVIEW, TX (KLTV) - With our first freeze on the way, it's time to start thinking about how to prepare for winter-like temperatures.

Places like TrueValue in Longview, run by the James family, are seeing increased business from homeowners prepping for cold weather, as residents prepared for the first cold blast of this season.

"A little bit more this year than the last year. These past few years have been a little more harsh, I think everybody's expecting the frozen pipes and try to be more prepared this year,"   Alec James says.

"Kind of surprised, as nice as the weathers been, people are preparing early. The split pipe insulation that comes in 6-foot sticks, we're selling those," says Randy James.

Many remember past winters where freezing weather caused burst water pipes and knocked out power. Pipe insulation and faucet protectors are big sellers right now as people hope to avoid those issues.

"When it's not sunny and there's bad weather moving in, that alerts people to come in and try to be prepared," Randy says.

And it's not just pipes people are worried about. They're grabbing heaters, propane, even matches and flashlights.

"We can order generators. Propane heaters, those are good to have," Alec says.

And spending a little prepping now is smart, to avoid paying a whole lot more later.

"Spend a few dollars on being prepared as opposed to several hundred dollars having to repair all your pipe," says Randy.

If you don't use insulation for outdoor pipes, plumbers say wrapping pipes in towels covered in plastic bags can also protect in a pinch.
