Students help plant donated trees on Tyler school playground
TYLER, TX (KLTV) - A partnership between four organizations is helping to once again bring trees to the Douglas Elementary School playground in Tyler.
The Texas Trees Foundation, Keep Tyler Beautiful, KERA, and Tyler's TREES foundation donated 12 trees to the school.
The students were out Thursday morning learning the nearly 20 steps needed to plant the trees, and before long they were off grabbing shovels and eager to begin the planting.
The students, enjoying the chance to do something different and leave something that may last for a long time.
"If somebody that goes to this school that I know, I can say that I planted these trees for you, and it will be like sort of like my memory," says Janiyah Green, a student at the school.
The trees selected are native to the East Texas area, including Mexican White Oak, Mexican Sycamore and Chinquapin Oak. When they are fully grown, they will be at least 40 to 50 feet tall.
