Officials tracked Brooks to a residence, where members of the Region 2 Special Response Team; Alvin, Pearland, League City Child Abduction Response Team; and the Gulf Coast Violent Offenders Task Force surrounded the suspect at 12:16 a.m. Sunday.

Sheriff officials say that Brooks left the residence holding a gun, attempting to flee in a car. They say he attempted to run over officers at the scene before he crashed into another vehicle.

Brooks was fatally wounded by members of the tactical team.

Ranger Davis, Smith County Sheriff's Office Lieutenant Paul Black and the three Sheriff's Office Detectives will be returning to Smith County Sunday morning.
