Henderson woman falls victim to Facebook scam
HENDERSON, TX (KLTV)
“I was making plans in my head. 'Well, I’ll buy a house; that way my son has his security. I'll get the surgeries I need. I'll be able to buy groceries and not worry about the next day and what we’re going to eat and where its coming from,'” Gonzalez explained.
But those plans were shattered after she realized it was all a scam.
“First person was Theresa Paddock telling me I was a Facebook lottery winner. Then she said I had to send $150 for insurance and all this other stuff for them to send it to me. I gave it all to her thinking this was honest. I was thinking 'OK God you worked a miracle here because of our situation,'” she said.
She eventually lost contact with Theresa and a man started reaching out to her via Facebook and text messages. Gonzalez says that money she lost is going to leave a deep hole.
“I know some people don’t think $150 is a lot of money. It is when you don’t have it. I mean, to us, $150 is gold,” Gonzalez said.
We tried calling the number listed on the Facebook lottery group's website but did not receive a response. In fact, the area code listed is a Chicago number but the group claims to be based in California.
Gonzalez has filed a report with the Henderson Police Department. She says she is most hurt by what happened because of what the money would have meant to her family.
“When you believe, and you pray so much to change your situation. Then people scam you. They make you look like a fool in front of your son who’s saying 'oh mommy when we get to do this, and when we get to do that'. Yeah baby, we’ll get to do that now because we’ve won this money,” she said.
