Trial date changed in Mineola teen shooting death

WOOD COUNTY, TX (KLTV) - A jury trial has been rescheduled for a Mineola man who is charged in the shooting death of a 19-year-old.

Jason Walters was scheduled to have a jury trial Monday in the case of the shooting death of Chris Griffin in an alley behind the EZ Mart convenience store in Mineola. The pre-trial hearing occurred on July 15, and a docket call was scheduled for August 13.

Court records show that the jury trial scheduled to begin Monday, August 17, was canceled. No reason for the cancellation was given. The new pre-trial hearing is scheduled for January 19, 2016, and the new jury trial date is scheduled for March 7, 2016.

Walters allegedly shot 19-year-old Christopher James Griffin at the EZ Mart on North Pacific Street in Mineola around 11:30 p.m. on June 15, 2014.

Police say an argument that started inside the convenience store spilled into the alley behind the store. Police say when they arrived they found Griffin laying in the alley with a gunshot wound to his neck. Authorities say Walters was still standing nearby holding a gun. However, Griffin's friends insisted Griffin was not the one arguing with Walters.

Mineola Police later issued a correction saying Griffin was not involved in the argument inside the store.

Walters is out of jail on a $250,000 surety bond, according to Wood County's website.
