TYLER, TX (KLTV) - Multiple engines from The Tyler Fire Department are responding to a fire in a vacant building.

The building is located at Spring Avenue and East Oakwood near downtown. Tyler police have closed North Broadway in both directions while firefighters contain the blaze. However, southbound lanes are still open. A ladder truck, 5 engines a district chief, and an investigator are on the scene. An ambulance has also arrived at the scene.

Loretta Perdue works in an office across the street from the building and said she smelled smoke coming from the blaze.

"You could smell the smoke in the office, so we went outside," said Perdue.  "I was trying to get a breath because it was pretty bad, we could feel the heat from the front door [of my office.]"

Tyler Fire PIO Paul Findley says the fire started underneath the building.  Firefighters remained on the scene into Tuesday night.

We have a crew on the scene. Stay with KLTV and KLTV.com for breaking developments.
