RUSK COUNTY, TX (KLTV) - After deliberating for two hours on Friday morning, a Rusk County jury found

Ashley M. Kubiak

guilty of two counts of criminally negligent homicide.

According to DPS, on April 29, an SUV driven by 63-year-old Sandra Jones of Henderson was traveling northbound on Highway 43 when the vehicle stopped to make a left turn. That's when it was struck by Kubiak's Dodge pick-up truck, which was traveling north, and a Ford pick-up truck going traveling south.

Jones and a passenger in her vehicle, 62-year-old Sheri Standard, also of Henderson, were both pronounced dead at the scene. Another passenger in the SUV, Sammy Meador, 6, of Henderson, was seriously injured.

Kubiak, 21, of Whitehouse, was driving the Dodge truck.

"The defendant was looking down at a text resulting in a collision where she turned a vehicle into oncoming traffic causing death and horrific injuries. I appreciate the jury holding the defendant accountable. I respect the jury's decision extending mercy for the defendant, but everyone was moved by the tremendous suffering and courage of the victims' family," said Rusk County Attorney Michael E. Jimerson.

Kubiak was sentenced to 180 days in jail, probated. Judge Guy Griffin set her probation to five years.
