HENDERSON COUNTY, TX (KLTV) - It's been one week since 11-year-old Michael Ellis was shot and taken to the hospital. Henderson County authorities say Ellis was accidentally shot by his brother after they got into their father’s gun cabinet and started playing with a loaded gun.
Mary Piper, a longtime family friend, was close by when the shooting occurred.
“I was next door at my granddaughter's and little Mark came over and said 'momma needs to see you… momma needs you to come over.' I said 'Well what happened Mark?' and he said 'momma needs you over there.' So, I got the kids in the car and I went over there," she said.
She said she didn't know what to expect next.
“I saw Michael sitting in a chair and his momma was shaking all over… I knelt down. I didn't say anything. I just knelt down and started praying,” said Piper.
Piper says praying was all she could do.
“After I prayed with him, he looked up at me and he said 'I'm going to die' and I said 'No you're not!' and we just prayed,” she said.
Several people in the Cross Roads community are now coming together to help Michael’s family.
“We are taking up donations for the family because they have been at the hospital since the incident happened and they'll be there probably another week,” said Tina Piper, Mary’s daughter-in-law.
