EXCLUSIVE VIDEO: Men try to pull over 10-year-old driver on busy Tyler street
TYLER, TX (KLTV) - A 10-year-old boy drove his grandmother's truck down several busy streets in Tyler before ultimately crashing into a railing at the Discovery Science Place in downtown Tyler.
Two men noticed the boy driving down Broadway and followed him while they spoke with 911 dispatchers. They say they noticed the truck moving erratically down the street and started following it.
"It was rush hour and I passed the truck and didn't think anything of it at first and it took a second to think about it: it looks like my son," says Mike Haynes, the driver who followed the boy down Broadway.
The boy's grandfather was at a doctor appointment off of Fleishel, and the boy and another child were with him. While the grandfather was with the doctor, the boy left, and drove off in the vehicle. Police say an argument with the younger sibling spurred the child to leave the doctor's office.
The child drove south on Fleishel, and then west on 5th Street. This is when he was noticed by a driver who called 911 to get help for the child.
"When he noticed we were following him is when he got off the road," says Copen King, the passenger who recorded a video of the 10-year-old driver.
After several attempts by the caller to get the child to stop, the child turned the truck into the Discovery Science Place parking lot, where it came to a stop after hitting a metal guard fence along the building's side, where the large mural is painted.
"He didn't know how to shut the truck off. I don't see how he put it in reverse. He hit the rail several times," says Haynes, "Rush hour on Broadway; it could have ended a lot worse."
No one was injured, and the vehicle sustained only minor damage. Police drove the boy's surprised and frustrated grandfather to the scene. The child was released into his grandfather's custody, and no charges are being filed.
