On Tuesday, some pint-sized lobbyists entered the state capitol trying to convince legislators to add pecan pie to the official state list.

Texas schoolchildren are lobbying senators in Austin to make pecan pie the official state pie.

SCR-12, the bill that would make pecan the state pie, has already passed a committee.

Most dessert specialists agree its the most popular pie they sell.

"Most popular is definitely pecan, and we have a bourbon pecan," says Calli Miller, owner of  'La Cabane de Dessert'.

But chocolate, apple, coconut creme, even fried pies sell. What is it about pecan pie?

"I just think its more southern and more traditional, you know you grew up eating it, you're great-grandma made it, and it just passed down," Miller says.

Though arguably tasty, some think its a waste of legislative time.

"That the state of Texas spending that money. I thought it was already the state pie," says Bel's diner owner Harvel Davis.

SCR-12 will now go before a full senate vote. The pecan tree is the State Tree of Texas, so it would make sense to make the pecan pie the state pie as well.
