SMITH COUNTY, TX (KLTV) - Friday, the newest segment of an East Texas toll road opened to the public.

Loop 49 now runs from Highway 110 South, directly to 31 West. The new section, referred to as "3-A", allows travel from Highway 155 South, to Highway 31 West.

Friday, community leaders unveiled the six mile stretch. It was all put together by East Texas contractors.

Tyler Mayor Barbara Bass and Noonday Mayor Mike Turman thanked the Texas Department of Transportation as they welcomed the freshly paved road into their cities.

"I heard all of the other communities with the story, 'If you build it, they will come.' My message [to the transportation commission], was 'We have built it. They're already here. Now we need a way to get these people around this town,'" said Bass.

"Toll 49 has been a long time dream for East Texas so this marks another day in the successful history of building a toll road around the City of Tyler, Smith County, and all of East Texas," said Randy Hopmann, Tyler District Engineer for the Texas Department of Transportation.

The new section of Loop 49 will be toll-free until December 3. The next segment of the toll road, which will run from Highway 31 West to Interstate 20, is scheduled to open in March.
