LEBANON, OH (FOX19) - A choir made up of inmates at the Warren Correctional Institution received a gold medal from the World Choir Games.

The group, which is named Umoja - meaning 'unity' in Swahili - competed last week when judges from the choir games went to the prison to hear them perform.

On Thursday, the judges returned to Lebanon to hand them certificates in honor of their gold medal performance.

Their performance was the first time a prison competed in the World Choir Games, and the first time they ever performed for a live audience.

Umoja was formed in 1993, but their future is in doubt because of cuts in state funding.
