LUFKIN, TX (KTRE) - An Angelina County constable arrested a Houston man and seized more than 30 pounds of marijuana following a traffic stop on U.S. 59 North Sunday evening.

Constable Tom Selman said he was patrolling the area when he pulled over a Mercury Cougar, driven by Claude Dewayne Welch, 53. Selman said Welch was driving 83 miles per hour in a 70 mile-per-hour zone.

Selman said he immediately could smell an odor of marijuana coming from the vehicle and had Welch get out of the car. Welch admitted to having marijuana in the vehicle, Selman said.

Selman said found 30.7 pounds of marijuana in three different garbage bags under the hatch of the car.

Selman said he arrested Welch without incident. He is being housed in the Angelina County Jail on a charge of possession of marijuana. As of 12:30 p.m. Monday, a bond has not yet been set.
