Police: Man arrested for setting fire during family violence

LONGVIEW, TX - On Saturday May 8, 2010 at around 3:48 a.m., Longview Officers were dispatched to 1114 West Fairmont Street for a report of a disturbance.

Officers arrived at the address and found smoke coming from the rear of the residential duplex. Officers entered and found a small fire in the kitchen that appeared to be intentionally set and they saw the interior of the duplex to be in disarray. The fire was extinguished and one of the residents of the duplex, Javier Mendoza, was located inside.

As officers questioned Mendoza about happened, his common-law wife arrived at the location and told officers she had fled the duplex because Mendoza had assaulted her. The victim had minor injuries and Mendoza was arrested and booked into the Gregg County Jail for assault-family violence (Class A misdemeanor) and arson (1st degree felony).

The Longview Fire Marshall's Office is conducting the investigation into the exact cause of the fire.
