Strange object found at scrap metal business

LUFKIN, TX (KTRE) - LUFKIN, TX (KTRE) - Fort Hood personnel is paying a visit to Lufkin this evening after a old war device was discovered at a Lufkin scrap metal business, Lufkin Police say.

Police spokesman J.B. Smith said Fort Hood's Explosive Ordinance Disposal personnel says the device, which possibly was designed in the Korean War era or earlier, is not considered dangerous, but EOD personnel are on the way to Lufkin to pick up the device.

Smith said LPD received a call from Guy's Construction, located at 3113 East Denman Ave., just after 10 a.m., that while processing scrap metal they found a suspicious looking object. Officers responded to the call and observed a rusty and dirty piece of military ordinance and sent photographs to EOD personnel.

EOD told police the device was a training device and did not house an explosive payload but may at one time could have held a small explosive charge at the base.

Police have an officer stationed at Guy's until EOD personnel arrive at the scene. Smith estimated they would arrive around 5 p.m.
