Van Zandt County sheriff’s deputy killed in Sunday wreck
VAN ZANDT COUNTY, Texas (KLTV) - The Van Zandt County sheriff has confirmed one of his deputies was killed in a wreck on Sunday.
Sheriff Joe Carter said Sgt. Jeremy McCoy was off-duty when the crash occurred.
According to a press release, McCoy was driving southbound on State Highway 198 at about 4:14 p.m. when he collided with a truck that, according to Texas DPS’ preliminary report, was turning into a private drive. One of McCoy’s children was in the vehicle and was flown to a Dallas hospital with non-life threatening injuries. McCoy died at the scene.
McCoy began his law enforcement career in 2006 as a telecommunications operator for the Kaufman County Sheriff’s Office. He had been with the Van Zandt County Sheriff’s Office since May of 2022 and was promoted to patrol sergeant in September.
McCoy is survived by a wife and four children.
DPS is investigating the crash.
“Please keep Sgt. McCoy’s family, both blood and blue, in your thoughts and prayers,” Carter said in a press release.
