Andy Woods students exceed SPCA fundraising goal

TYLER, Texas (KLTV) - Andy Woods Elementary School in Tyler exceeded their goal of $800, raising $1,170 for the SPCA as part of the 5th grade’s service project.

Fifth grader Taylor Coleman participated in the service project and talked about why they chose the nonprofit.

“We decided to raise money because we knew that the dogs that were there needed to be adopted and that they probably needed more money because it’s pretty expensive to to feed dogs and give them baths.”

Each class gave monetary donations for the fundraiser. The class that raised the most money won a prize; that was Mrs. Wampler’s first grade class, and they had a popsicle party, a play date with the SPCA puppies, and will take a picture with Principal Jones’ dog, Winston Duke, for the yearbook.

SPCA Director of Operations Kat Cortelyou said, “To have these children be this in tune and focused on our mission is amazing. When they give back, that just makes it even better. So we brought out Mustang Sally and one of her sisters today to accept this check and visit with everybody, and we’re just really appreciative of the class.”

SPCA president Deborah Dobbs says this money will help these dogs get a second chance at life by putting the money into their emergency medical fund.

“Many times the animals that we save are sick or injured, so that’s one of our more expensive undertakings, is to take a dog that’s homeless but also injured, and so these kids are going to help those dogs that are really needing that assistance.”

The SPCA also plans to put the money toward renovations for their new Tyler facility.
