City of Longview faces challenge in addressing Green Street overpass.

LONGVIEW, Texas (KLTV) - Many call it the “Green Street monster” since it has taken the top off many truck trailers for years. There are actually two railroad overpasses on Green Street in Longview, and the city has already done everything they can to provide more clearance.

Months pass without incident, and just when you think the Green Street overpasses will not claim another victim, they do, according to Longview City Spokesman Richard Yeakley.

“It seems like it comes in a pattern, right? You don’t have any for a little bit and then a couple of vehicles don’t see the sign, don’t follow the posted truck route, and they end up getting caught up underneath it,” Yeakley said.

The City of Longview website has safe truck routes mapped out in red, and Green Street is not on the map.

“There are two bridges, right, at Mobberly and at High Street, that are much lower and much more conducive to truck traffic than trying to get the trucks through the Green Street Bridge,” Yeakley said.

Yeakley says those streets are lower so there’s more clearance. Most impacts come from out-of-town drivers who are looking for a turnaround. The city has added warning lights and hanging plastic pilons that impact, without damage, vehicles that are too tall to make it.

“We want to be as clear as possible that if you’re more than eleven foot four inches on one side or more than eleven foot two inches on the other side you shouldn’t be going under this bridge,” Yeakley said.

The city gained just over a foot of clearance when it lowered the street in 2014, but:

“We’re actually at the level of the foundations for the railroad bridge there. And so, you don’t really want to go lower because at that point you’re going deeper than the railroad foundation. And there could be some concerns about the stability there,” Yeakley said.

As far as making the overpasses taller, Union Pacific says that would entail raising the tracks throughout the city and would be prohibitive. The city is open for suggestions.

“I don’t really know what that turns out to be but anything we can do to help people know, I think that’s a good thing,” Yeakley said.

According to, the present Green Street Bridge at Nelson Street was built with steel in 1935.
