DPS: Alcohol possible factor in Terry Co. school bus crash

TERRY COUNTY, Texas (KCBD) - Drivers traveling to Lubbock from Brownfield should be aware of a wreck involving a Levelland ISD bus at the intersection of Highway 62/82 and FM 211, just south of Meadow. DPS says there were no children on the bus.

Around 5:41 a.m., the school bus failed to yield the right of way and crashed with a tractor-trailer semi in the intersection. The truck driver, bus driver and an assistant on the bus were taken to Brownfield Hospital for minor injuries.

The intersection is expected to be closed for the next several hours while first repsonders work to clear the scene. Northbound lanes have reopened. Southbound traffic is being rerouted on FM 211.

Troopers are investigating if alcohol may have been involved. We’ll continue to update this story as we learn more.

“The District is cooperating with the Texas Department of Public Safety as it continues its investigation into the accident,” Levelland Superintendent Becky McCuthen said in a statement.

At approximately 6:00a.m. today, August 26, 2022, the Levelland ISD administration was informed that one of its school buses carrying two employees had been involved in an accident involving another vehicle.The school bus was traveling eastbound on FM 211 at the time of the accident. No Levelland ISD students were on the bus or otherwise involved in the incident.

Federal and state privacy laws prohibit the District from disclosing any confidential, personnel, or health information. The District is cooperating with the Texas Department of Public Safety as it continues its investigation into the accident. Since this is an ongoing investigation, the District will have no further comment at this time.
