LONGVIEW, Texas (KLTV) - It seems prices of everything have risen, and school supplies are no exception. To help out families, the Longview Independent School District will be providing basic supplies for students at no cost to parents.

Alicia Hernandez has a couple of her own kids and four grandkids she helps out with. The kids attend Longview ISD schools, and she hadn’t heard that the district is providing kids with basic school supplies for free.

“That’s awesome. That’s awesome. I know it can help a lot of parents right now, especially with the economy being as high as it is, and gas and all. But it’s an awesome thing, everybody helping each other out. If it’s the school, then that’s an awesome thing, too,” Alicia said.

She was pretty glad to hear the news, since she hadn’t done her school supply shopping yet.

Longview ISD Superintendent James Wilcox says this is a new program this year.

“Well, in the past we have had certain campuses that have made school supplies available, but all campuses have a budget for school supplies,” Wilcox said.

Sarah Hernandez has three kids, and one goes to LISD. She also didn’t know about the program.

“That’s actually pretty easy for us, then, because we save a little money on that one,” Sarah said.

Alicia says she’s had her own unofficial school supply aid in the past.

“A lot of my family and friends, we’d get together, and we’d help some of the kids that aren’t able to do it. So, it’s a good thing. It helps out a lot of people,” Alicia said.

Maybe they won’t have to do that this year, if their friends’ kids go to LISD.

“We’re trying to help out in a time of COVID and inflation,” Wilcox said.

Several parents who had bought school supplies said they spent between $40 and $80 on basic school supplies per child, and that the cost was up from last year.

Longview ISD says basic school supplies will be in classrooms district-wide the first day of school. The program does not include backpacks, electronics or clothing.
