TYLER, Texas (KLTV) - The University of Texas at Tyler is partnering with Medical Scholars Academy for its annual summer camp.

This camp is designed to help area high school students explore the different career options in healthcare.

The five-day summer camp is all about expanding the students’ interests and knowledge of the healthcare industry. From learning about medicine in the wilderness to what goes on in a pharmacy, they’re getting the experience they need to make the right career choice for them.

“This is a great program,” said Layla Amox, a Medical Scholars Academy student. “Definitely a great overnight program, too.”

Students like Amox, who is from Hughes Springs High School. come from the outskirts of Tyler, So, this is an opportunity they can’t get at home.

“Even though we live an hour and a half away, we wouldn’t be able to do as much as we could here,” Amox said.

Amox plans to be a labor and delivery nurse, which she got to learn more about on Day 2 at the simulation lab.

“My mom was a labor and delivery nurse,” Amox said. “She has been for over ten years now. She’s kind of my inspiration.”

One of the goals of the program was to show the students that a great healthcare career is attainable right here in East Texas.

“We were seeing that all the students were thinking that their jobs, to have a good job was to go to Houston or Dallas,” said Patricia Maddox, the Supernet coordinator for Northeast Texas. “When in reality, there are lots of jobs here in Northeast Texas that need filling in the healthcare industry in particular. And so we want to try and keep them here, try to keep them interested in staying here to get their education and in working here.”

With this unique and extensive program, UT Tyler is setting these students up for success.

“This is a great opportunity for high school students to find and learn about who they are, their interests in the healthcare profession, and to get some of their questions answered,” Maddox said. “And so, get out there and find our application. It will open again this fall for next year, and come see us.”
