LONGVIEW, Texas (KLTV) - The GAP Distribution Center in Longview came one step closer to opening for business by holding a job fair in Longview, and hundreds showed up to apply.

The line was surprisingly long at the Maude Cobb Convention Center in Longview, but most, like Brent Thompson and Travasil Robertson, expected it and were there for the same reason.

“Looking forward to getting some work here,” Thompson said.

“I’m trying to get on at the new company - the Gap company,” Robertson said.

They are both looking for something new.

“I think it’ll bring opportunity to my town,” Robertson said.

“Are you working right now?” I asked Thompson.

“Yes, I am,” he replied.

“I’m in between jobs at the moment,” Robertson said.

Workforce Solutions East Texas teamed up with Gap, and Workforce Education Coordinator Evie Henson helped applicants through the process.

“They’re going to register at the front desk, and then they are going to watch a Gap video. And then they will be called back one by one to spend that five, 10l 15 minutes interviewing with a GAP representative today,” Henson said.

In about an hour, the line had been diminished.

“We have probably registered at least 600, 700, and here it is 11:15 a.m.,” Henson said.

Those applying for positions had similar reasons for doing so.

“This is an opportunity we never had. It’s distribution.,” Robertson said. “I’m pretty good at that. I fit the criteria for it.”

“This will be a better place. It’s a global company, said applicant Brent Thompson. “A lot more opportunities for advancement, and they’re building a humongous facility out north of town. It’s not that far a drive; everything works out well.”

According to the Longview Economic Development Corporation, the Gap facility will be opening around the end of this month.

LEDCO says the Gap Fulfillment and Distribution Center will be needing to fill about 800 positions when they open. LEDCO says they may eventually employ 1,200. Workforce Solutions officials said if you missed the job fair you can still apply online.
