KILGORE, Texas (KLTV) - If there’s too much stuff and it’s not needed it’s time to sell. That’s exactly what is happening at the old post office in Kilgore this Saturday.

The old post office in Kilgore has a rare thing indeed: a basement. Why is it a rare thing in East Texas? Well, Kilgore Historical Preservation Foundation or KHPF, President Chuck Conrad knows.

“The reason for that is the water table is pretty high around here. So, it floods downstairs,” Conrad said.

And they want to stop the flooding at the old post office, which is now a small venue across the street from The Texan in Downtown Kilgore.

“We’re going to try to seal it up and install more sump pumps. We have pumps running all the time,” Conrad said.

Yes, there’s water on the floor down there, but stuff needs to happen before fixing can begin.

“The first thing you have to do to start attacking that is clean it up,” Conrad said.

And so, the clutter will be inventoried before Saturday and sold to help KHPF pay for repairs.

“We really don’t know what’s downstairs. There’s just all kinds of weird stuff,” Conrad said.

Some of the weird stuff, like a handmade wooden oil derrick and pump house will be deemed historical and displayed, perhaps upstairs in the venue. But other weird stuff might be sold, like maybe the little chairs.

“Start up your own nursery or something. These chairs would be perfect,” Conrad said.

“Lord knows what’s in this cardboard tube, but we have three or four of them. Whoever needs a cardboard mailing tube these would be just really special,” Conrad said.

Shower curtain hooks?

“I was looking for some of these not too long ago,” Conrad said.

“Now that derrick you might sell?” I asked Chuck who held a small wooden derrick.

“I don’t know. We’re going to find out,” Conrad said.

“Oh, we have duckies! Rubber duckie anyone? Christmas lights, we have loads of Christmas lights,” Conrad said.

And paper lanterns.

“These would look good in your back yard,” Conrad said.

And if you’re feeling lucky:

“Raffle tickets,” Conrad said.

And if stuff doesn’t sell, they have a plan.

“If it has some salvageable value, we’re going to give it to some other charities around here. So, it’s not going to get thrown away unless it’s just absolute junk,” Conrad said.

There is likely some of that down there, too, but you have to move that to get to the good stuff.

The sale is behind the old Kilgore post office in downtown Kilgore from 7 a.m. to 3 p.m. If you have stuff you’d like to donate to the sale you can drop it by the old post office from 6 p.m. to 9 p.m. Wednesday through Friday.

The items will not be marked with a price, so shoppers will be able to name their own price.
