TIMPSON, Texas (KTRE) - The Timpson Bears enter the 2021 season with a bad taste in their mouth.

The Bears lost to eventual state champion Shiner 49-7 in the 2A DI semifinals. Up until that point Timpson looked unstoppable.

”When the season ended last year we told the kids, ‘look we are really good, but now you have seen there is a different level,” head coach Kerry Therwanger said.

This year Timpson enters the season as a top 5 state ranked team. A far cry from last year when they were picked 5th in district.

”Everyone knows what is coming an it is up to us to not worry about what everyone else is doing,” Therwanger said. “If we can do that we will have some success. We probably have as much talent we have ever had. After making a deep run you usually lose more than we lost. to be as dependent on a lot of young guys last year was exciting and we are really excited for their potential this year.”

The Bears return their skill players led by Terry Bussey and Braden Courtney.

”We have a strong core.,” Courtney said. “We are family. We are more than teammates and we show that every Friday night.”

Therwanger believes the strength is the offensive line with all five starters back.

”If we block perfectly and precisely, we will get all those touchdowns like we did last year,” lineman Xander Stephens said.

Timpson opens the season at Frankston on August 27.
