TYLER, Texas (KLTV) - The 30th Annual Corporate Spelling Bee benefiting Literacy Council of Tyler raised over $65,000 for the nonprofit organization, which serves over 2,000 adult students each year.

“Having a spelling bee with adults, and the adults that represent our sponsors, helps drive that mission home to them,” said Whitney Patterson, the executive director of the Literacy Council of Tyler. “It helps people put it in perspective and understand what we’re really about and how literacy really impacts our community.”

COVID-19 kept the non-profit organization from hosting its annual spell-off in 2020. This year, they returned to the fundraiser and competition with a “movie” theme. Participants wore costumes from movies like Toy Story, Ghostbusters, and more.

And the winners?

Laura Williams and Melissa Combs from Squyres Johnson Squyres, AKA Mike Wazowski and Sully from Monster’s, Inc., won the spelling bee. Williams and Combs said they have competed multiple years but this was their first win.
