LONGVIEW, Texas (KLTV) - Former Dallas Cowboy Quincy Carter will be hosting a quarterback camp in Gilmer this coming weekend.

The event will be at Gilmer on July 24. There will be three different times.

Elementary age students will have camp from 8:30 a.m. to 10:30 a.m. Middle school athletes will have camp from 10:30 a.m. to noon. High school students will have their camp 6:30 p.m. to 8 p.m. The cost of the camp is $50.

More info on the camp can be found here.

“One thing I tell these kids at these camps is that everyone is going to be teaching you different things,” Carter said. “Everything might not work out for you and your body and abilities might not be there for you to do that, but you have to put something in that toolbox and take some tools along with you on every stop on your journey.”

Carter, drafted out of the University of Georgia, played for Dallas from 2001 to 2003. He was cut from the team early in the 2004 Training Camp. Carter would play with various other leagues including the Area Football League in the following years.

Carter has been arrested several times since he left the Cowboys. He is working to stay clean and use his life as a warning to young athletes.

“I was reaching and grabbing straws now for anything that may make me feel better,” Carter said. “I realized I had ruined my life and great career with drugs and alcohol and not with the man up above to restore me. "

Carter is hoping that the story of his consequences will help the next generation of pro athletes.

“That is the passion I have,” Carter said. “That is what burns inside of me because I do not want anyone to feel what I have been feeling over some time.”
